Development = the differences in the world (all places are different) Get poor people to the same as rich or sick people healthy. To even out differences b/t countries and w/i countries, and to make conditions on earth more homogeneous for all people, where they may live and whatever they may be. Scholars of development have disagreed over: whether the goal of development is pursued in the correct way, whether development actually works", (recently) whether the goal of western-style development itself is desirable in the first place. Peripheral countries should have same path of industrialization and urbanization as core countries. Western values (rationalism, science, democracy: real-world strategies. Model of economic development (follows modernization: traditional society limited technology; static society. Transition triggered by external influence, interests, or markets: preconditions for take-off commercial exploitation of agriculture and extractive industry. Installation of physical infrastructure (roads, railways) and emergence of social/political elite: take-off - development of a manufacturing sector.
