Government incentives encouraged people to clear the forest and settle in the amazon region. Investment offered a 12 year tax holiday for projects; 75% of projects costs covered by government. Offered 240 acres to each settler that moved to the amazon. Land reform: land would be redistributed to new settlers more deforestation to show that the land was being used: action plan to reduce deforestation in the amazon. Created new protected areas in deforestation hotspots. Enabled law enforcement to seize or destroy property: forest code (reduce deforestation) Bans deforestation on steep slopes and near rivers (loss of tree roots cause floods and soil erosion) Calls for restoration of deforested areas: soy moratorium (reduce deforestation) Large soybean traders agreed not to buy soy grown on cleared amazon land. Outcome: reduced soy grown on newly reduced land in the brazilian. Amazon, more people pushing for similar agreements on beef. But soy production continues to expand in other places.
