Document Summary

Immigration was historically used as an instrument of british colonial power. After the british conquest of new france, the british government set the immigration policy. Encourage large scale immigration from the british isles. After confederation, canada remained closely tied to the british empire. Immigration policies continued to reflect the imperialist attitude that the british were superior to all other people. Immigrants from other areas were still needed due to a shortage of workers (eg. on railroads) During the late 19th century and early 20th century, all new immigrants were still expected to conform to canadian society. The result was a poor experience for the original occupants of western ontario that were not british immigrants (e. g. plains indians, metis and doukhobors) Results: manitoba became a small province on july 15, 1870; the metis obtained most of their demands: The use of english and french languages within the government. A dual system of protestant and roman catholic schools.
