Cities to know: moscow, st petersburg, ufa, novosibirsk, vladivostok: ancestors lived in european part- everything evolved from this region, siberia is inhospitable, western russia has warmer climate, more fertile land, travel is much easier (closer to europe) St petersburg (1703: built for economic, security and cultural regions, commercial port on the baltic, access to maritime routes, russia"s window to the west . Never developed highway network (as in na and europe), hampering circulation between cities. More single family homes service provision: caused class/ethnic segregation. Adopting urban growth boundaries to limit city size (moscow, st petersburg: a way of making the urban environment quite manageable, cuts back on commute, centralizes business, no longer in existence. Social disadvantages: disease spreads, development of ethnic enclaves, intensifies class division, no inter-socialization, limits flow of information, education may suffer, life becomes mundane. Social advantages: easy access to services, improves work efficiency. Archipelago urbanization: deliberate development of new cities.
