Next goal was a near earth space orbit space station. Nixon liked the idea of a reusable space station that could stay in orbit and save money for future developments. Sort of space truck program which could haul goods up and down to space stations in orbit. Primary goal be cost efficient: shuttle design. Wanted to build a shuttle that would have jet engines to manoeuver during landings. Disposable launch system was designed to get orbiter into space. One of the biggest issues was to deal with the under belly of the orbiter for re- entry. Thermal tiles were designed to withstand 2500 degrees f. , orbiter would have between 24-35k tiles glued to bottom of shuttle. Breakthrough digital flight control now common in all large space crafts. Enterprise test orbiter, set design of space shuttles that would remain solid design for many years the shuttle would land at three different locations through its history.
