The intense heat drives an invisible chimney of hot air miles into the atmosphere. Through fire scars, every time it is burned you can see the growth rings embedded in them. Fires created open grown forests which big trees. Lots of space b/w trees b/c only some survived the past fires. That spring, little rain fell, making the northern rockies tinder dry. Locomotives scattered sparks along tracks, starting fires that spread into the forest. A cold front came through and winds picked up, and the fires erupted. Cause small fires to merge into huge fires: describe the story behind the real smokey the bear. A cub orphaned by a fire in new mexico became the real smokey the bear vs carton one. Taken to the animal hospital as he got burned by fire. Bear became representative of the struggle against fire. Escape fire saved trees on the ridgeline and survived the fire.
