Soil freezing overwintering plants access survival, growth and reproduction. Soil freezing has direct effects on plants- not just growth-soil properties. Can have a high microbial activity at -5 still looking for water. Lethal cold- complete freeze and mortality- microbial lysis. In our region- planta have very low lethal temperatures: synthesis of observed and predicted responses of soil freezing dynamics and severity to climate change, explore plant and soil responses to changes in climate. Freezing of plants if during fall and winter-when air temp is very low and there is no snow to regulate ground temperature. Yukiwari-snow plowing- to control weeds (only plants will survive cold, not weeds) :colder soils in a warmer world: more freeze/thaw cycles. In london- in a warmer year- we get fewer days where the soil is frozen. Most extreme frost cycles -10*c to +20*c. Air temp thermal layer (snow, organics) soil freezing plant responses. Root lysis, soil aggregate disruptions, microbial lysis: thaw.
