Geography 2330A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Frequency Distribution, Drainage Density, Denudation
Document Summary
Many countries run a series of analysis staions that monitor the characterisics of rivers in their region. Canada has a lot of gauging systems where water is monitored in rivers. In london, there are three rivers that are monitored, including medway creek. At gauging staions, they only measure the water level, not the actual discharge. They are able to ind the discharge by previously having the channel area, and inding the rivers velocity, and muliplying the two together. Stream low data can be summarized staisically, e. g. as frequency distribuion of extreme lows: these are useful as they help idenify when a river may overlow and lood the surrounding area. A typical planning outline in ontario, would be what is the hundred-year lood line, and the likelihood of a lood to occur in that lood line. Large range between discharge for rivers, very unique for each situaion.
