Arche power, rule, principle, beginning (people during this era were looking for the principles that define all the different phenonmena. Kosmos order, beauty (everything that has order is beautiful) Psyche soul, life giving principle life is motion and being aware of surroundings nous - mind. Monist people who believed in one single principle. Thales who believed water was the underlying principle, seamen is realted to water which is related to life and is the basic substance of life. These were all material substances and these people are all materialists.
