Document Summary

Napoleon was trying to find some king of a balance between the great innovations of the revolution (balancing revolutionary gains and social conservatism) The patriarchal nature of the civil code- giving a lot of power to the father in the family (women and children found themselves restrained) Divorce did not exist before the revolution, now it was quite easy to divorce. Easier for a man to initiate it than a women. The revolution required inheritance to be split equally among children- Napoleon now allowed people to take 25% of the estate and give it to one child in particular (the idea is to facilitate the stability of a family business, crop, etc. ) Napoleonic rule worked rather well, in part because economic circumstances were good (napoleon was very lucky in this way- he happened to rule in a good economic time) The fall of napoleon was clearly a military collapse.
