Cost of the great war- 65 million mobilized, 37 million military casualties, Monetary cost- billion (allies), billion (central powers) Material devastation- uncertain: france calculated loss of 25% of national. No country really finds a way forward because there really isn(cid:495)t one. Everyone(cid:495)s borrowing from each other and this is not sustainable. Thereby wiping out the middle class in germany. People become very angry; politics becomes very polar. No one believes that if you work hard you will be rewarded. The government has no money- no money to deal with promises made during the war. Modest stability that only lasts for 5 years. They believe they will force change- it does not work. Then germany is paying off the allies- they(cid:495)re giving it to the british who are. The notion is that the u. s. will loan money to germany. A cycle that is not sustainable- interest builds and builds.
