Europe is a very open and fractured continent entirely accessible via ship (many seas, rivers, etc. ) Open to migrations from the east and south. The map of europe is particularly diverse a key word in european history. Diversity = endless con ict (commonly, i. e germany, france, britain, etc. ) European states come in all kinds of shapes and sizes: dynasties. Most european states were rules by monarchs. There were a few republics, but not in a democratic sense: a state where a group of people rule rather than one man , dutch republic. Most european states are de ned by what the ruler"s ancestors accomplished and accumulated (territorial wise) during their time as ruler (dynasties) Organizing principle is not language, religion, nationalism: organizing principle is the dynasty.
