History 1401E Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Spinning Jenny, Water Frame, Social Mobility
Document Summary
Did not happen quickly and it was not planned: it was a long, complex and wide transformation. Occurred most powerfully and rapidly in england. Demographic growth: an old demographic regime. A pre-industrial pattern that is visible in most european societies. A high and unstable mortality: could peak very quickly and then drop, people would die fairly young. Limited ways to reduce fertility: late marriage. Most people would want to be established before they were married: forcing people to become a part of the clergy. Mortality rates were starting to decline but life still remained short. Small advances in transportation and food production. Limited amount of warfare: less people dying due to diseases being spread. States could provide more control and relief: had the ability to contain diseases and slow the spread. People were healthier and had a greater ability to reproduce. The two trends together led to an increase in population.
