In addition, we see a resurgent church in medieval period. Church fills cultural void that was left after roman empire. Church has strange ideas that commerce and lending for interest is a sin. Preventing market economy b/c cultural glue holding europe together is against it. Teaches to listen to word of god, church etc. Peasants don"t have incentive to work beyond subsistence level b/c stuck working for lords and taught by church to accept what they have. Also separated from one another by these forests. Merchants: new class of people not bound to land who realize that so long as aristocracy retains its position and as long as church retains bar on usury, they cannot move up. This class of people is dissatisfied by position and are separated by land b/w manors etc. Higher up people have no reason to claim land b/w manors b/c it endangers them.
