One legacy: destruction that occurred in indochina. Remember the war was not restricted to south vietnam (in north vietnam, Laos survived more bombs than any nation in history. The hmong (an ethnic minority)- non-literate hill tribe: they suffered one of the highest mortality rates that anyone in any war. Brought in a genocidal regime in cambodia- killed up to a quarter of the population. Both laos and cambodia received their independence in 1954- around the time of the geneva accord. Both were using local groups as their proxies. The kingdom of laos was led by prince souvanna phouma (the nephew of the. King and he was the prime minister: he was not tilting towards anything, wanted to maintain neutrality. He was challenged by the pathet laos (left leaning coalition of groups that organized themselves in opposition to the french at the end of ww2, they worked with the viet minh)
