Enthusiasm for war: the declaration of war, background, canada"s position, the first contingent. 1914: canada was more urban, diverse and industrialized than ever before. Canada was still mostly british and canadian born in origin. Began in the colonial office in whitehall england. August 4th 1914: german troops had crossed over into neutral belgium. Germany was told to withdraw all their troops from belgium or war would be declared. Addressed telegrams to all british colonies around the world (cid:862) ee preface defense scheme, war has broken out with germany(cid:863) Once the telegrams were sent, the british empire (the world) was at war. Most canadians did not know why they were going to war. An arms race, industrial competition, trade competition between britain and germany. The balkans were part of the austria-hungary empire.
