Sam cooke and his wife, brother, and band attempted to check into the holiday in north in louisiana. Party called ahead to make reservations, were confirmed. Cooke was livid: his wife and brother tried to calm him down, feared that an angry black man in the south could get him killed. They all left, causing a commotion on the way out. Went to the castle motel that was located in dt: arrived, police were waiting for them, arrested for disturbing the peace. Sam cooke was at the height of his popularity during this year. Major african american pioneers of rock n roll had been neutralized (chuck berry, etc) Late 1950s, early 60s, african american influence on music was again filtered through their experiences as second class citizens in the usa. Merged from the same raw materials of gospel and rhythm and blues music.
