Lecture 4: the consolidation of power and the police state. It varied depending on the audience they modified their message based on what they thought the audience wanted to hear. In many cases they played down their anti-semitism because they realized the audience wouldn"t be receptive about it: their two main messages what they would put people back to work and destroy the treaty of versailles. 1% of the german population, so they didn"t have a lot of political power: because hitler held so many seats in the reichstag, he could get them to vote the way he wanted them to. They intended to use the reichstag (legal means) to establish an authoritarian government (essentially destroying the system. ) Hitler did, but he did it for himself rather than for the conservatives. Initially the conservatives chose hitler because he was anti-weimar republic and anti-democracy, as were the conservatives who put him in power.
