Robert nivelle: often referred to as the man who was forgotten or the man who never was . He had a major role in the french & british armies, essential to how wwi progressed in the year of 1917. A french commander cornel at the beginning of the war (1914), well known for his leadership in the battle of verdun (corp commander of several divisions) Quick promotion after verdun, eventually replaced joffre as the french commander-in-chief in december, 1916. After verdun, the french war effort was facing serious crisis: french army suffered serious losses (in both number and quality) Verdun had cost the french army serious loss in manpower and the quality of soldiers remaining (in terms of ghting abilities, training and experiences) Morale was seriously damaged: the war doesn"t seem to be ending soon, and there seems to be no other solution.
