Geography of the western front, 1914-1915: the territories north and east of the front line = under german control. 10% of france under german control = important agricultural & mining regions = strategic importance in the french landmass in an economic point of view: nieuport (english channel)-armentieres (ypres); low plains. Ypres to armentieres = all british: armentieres-lens (vimy); speciality: agriculture & mining, lens-lassingy (somme); rolling farmland. Grew to be under british control as the uk power grew. Battles are constantly being fought in this area. Traditionally, this is where the french kings had their coronations: lassingy-rhims (aisne); hills and crests. Occupied by the french: rheims-argonne (verdun); broken & forested. Occupied by the french: vosges; mountainous. Occupied by the french, mostly the site where americans functioned when they joined the war.
