Backlash of church - regulating sex and sexuality. Idea that church started regulating when, who, how could have sex. Jesus spoke of celibacy more for men. But cult of celibacy more towards women and female virginity. They could live longer - childbirth biggest cause of death. Parents wanted daughters to make good wives to husbands. Marriage was hard work - many women wanted to avoid this.
