Document Summary

Week 5: causes of urban middle class reformers mid to late 19th century still victorian. Issue and obsenity and censorship, prostitution and venereal disease, eugenics and reproduction movement. We see extensive industrialization and with this we see a plethora of social issues slum, disease, addiction, crime. All of these are related to issues of sex and sexuality. Mcr blamed many of these problems not on industrial capitalism which was really at the heart of all these problems, they blamed it on what was easier to blame the working class and immigrants. All urban decay and corruption was the working class and immigrants faults. Easier to the blame these people instead of the industrial capitalists that were really creating these issues. These people were seen as morally inferior (all people of colour and non christian) These attitudes were part of a rising eugenics movement. A movement in the us and canada that was concerned about the survival of the fittest.
