Catholic priests who came to aboriginal colonies came in the 17th c to convert the natives to catholicism. When they arrived they saw them as wild immoral savages who needed to convert as a way to adopt a european life. They wanted to turn them into civilized people and adopting the. European way included adopting their customs about sex and sexuality. These conversion projects can be seen in a variety of ways 1. Racist about empire and european arrogance and the racist destruction of native culture (seen as passive culture that had no way of fighting back against the forces of catholic missionaries) 2. Sincere catholic missionaries who wanted to bring religion to the natives (why did they need to do this when the natives had their own religion what makes.
