What made the 1950"s so complex and the pressure filled at the heart of this was the cold war. There was a huge desire for normalcy and this is represented by the nuclear family. The cold war was basically an arms race between the ussr and usa each country feared that the other one would unleash a nuclear war. Sirens would go off at school and children would hide under their desks. Chief propagator of this was joseph mccarthy who was a state senator. He believed that there were soviet spy"s and sympathizers. Communists were black listed meaning they could never work again. Conducted which hunts to find these communists (if you were from. Cuba or russia which were put together using flimsy evidence he died at 48 of alcoholism and lost all his creditability he targeted homosexuals thinking they were more vulnerable to becoming german spies.
