Each theory was challenged by the medical board. Causation: miasma (masmatic) - early 19 century (theory) Fire cannons in the streets to clean the air. You could smell the city before you can see it- very bad. Human and animals poop all over the place. Water from the pump, no flush toilets, Way of travel was by animals horse. Believed that the sanitation was the problem: cleaning the city up to get away the smell, doing it for the wrong reasons. 1840s-1860s - before the break out of the germ theory: hints that are so close to the realizing the cause. Empirical discoveries they are watching what is happening. Semmelweis -1840s: lying-in issue, had a break down- committed to a hospital and died. Microscopic creatures: main issue is that microscopic creatures that affect health leads to sanitation. Once germ theory is accepted - we know who the enemy anymore: got to kill them first or stop them first.
