Week 3 social distinctions september 24 2012: hierarchy is the main system for establishing social order in early modern europe, it is based off of the great chain of being. Those who prayed - oratores: responsible for people"s souls. Those who fought - bellatores: responsible for protection. Those who worked laborares: responsible for food, clothes, etc. Ranks of nobles in england: duke, marquess, earl, viscount, baron. Ranks in france: duc, marquis, comte, vicomte, baron: nobles, 1% to 15 % of population, original function = war. People could also move out of the noble class because the eldest son would receive the land from their father leaving the youngest with nothing. Entail: cannot sell land, must be kept for future generations. If a noble dies and his son is left with the inheritance but is too young to know better, another noble is granted power over the boy. In which time they have power over all that the boy inherits.
