The colonial church the clergy had to swear an oath that they would not violate any of the crown"s rights. Diff between church and cathedral: bishops are in charge of the cathedral. The religious role & conversion: wherever you turn, the church is there. Hard to separate the secular from the religious: 1520"s- trying to keep the catholic church from collapsing- reformation. Had missionary church- teaching churches: gods and saints merge into one if they. The church as an agent of the state: teaching them culture, teaching them spanish, converting people, making the empire larger, church is serving a political purpose. About a murder trial- medina accused of killing his wife. Makes up a story about his wife cheating on him swayed to believe him because of societies belief that the wife was cheating. What does it tell you about the villages: very gossipy- everyone knows each other"s business.
