1640 – 1660s England  Glorious Revolution Restoration of the Monarchy  • Glorious Revolution – Oliver Cromwell defeated Charles the first and established  a military dictatorship – he felt that Charles church was getting to catholic dies  1658 • Cromwell Died his son took over  • In 1660 the English weren’t happy and in 1660 Charles the first returned as the  monarchy but with parliamentary control  • Restoration of culture is lively in the 1660s  • It is a prosperous time in England – contrast to Cromwell’s dictatorship  • England looks back at the religious war and went with religious toleration  • Anglican church was the national church of the state – some rules applied  • Deeper level of analysis we knew that some of these assumptions are not true –  but the concept of monarchy is looked at as a positive  France •  Civil wars of the 1650s known as the Fronde   • O
