Na(cid:448)y (cid:449)ouldn"t ha(cid:448)e to o(cid:272)(cid:272)upy all of the islands just strategic ones less work. Attack begins with air and naval bombardment. Marines land on beach under cover of embardment. Neither side wanted to be burdened by taking prisoners. High casualties especially on the japanese part. Reflects japanese willingness to die for emperor. Military used the idea of an emperors divinity to create a code of honor. Willing to fight to the last man. Faced tremendous resistance near the end in okinawa and iwo jima. Started to result in suicides by the japanese.
