American entrance to wwi: america in 1914 had no real armies, only a few divisions in strength. Mainly used for police protocol near the front line. Had no national interest in joining the war: america was undecided, ambivalent public opinion no guarantee that the usa would be on the allied"s side. Large german immigration, who were not pro-allies. Large irish-american population, who didn"t like the british at all: 1916 presidential election president wilson won his second term, promised that he would keep usa out of wwi. Usa has lend france & britiain so much money, that it would be usa"s commercial interest to ensure that allies won. If the allies lost, usa would never get their money back: unrestricted u-boat campaign (february 1917) Ludendorff and hindenburg decided that the blockade could only be broken via the resumption of usw, and targeting all neutral countries who offer support to the allies.
