Lecture 12 Part 3 – Westward Expansion  Westward Expansion and the CPR o Huge amounts of advertising, both inside and outside Canada o Land was extremely cheap  160 acres for a $10 patent fee and promise to improve the land within 3 years (working it, etc.) o Canadian Pacific Railway  Had to start to get people out west  Liberals completely against it – too expensive  “Rash and disastrous step for a handful of people”  Sir Stanford Fleming  Surveyor for the CPR, engineer-in-chief  Building and surveying was a huge and difficult task  The land that they just treated for with the Natives was sold off to private companies to build the railroad  Cash subsidy offered to get people to build the CPR  $30
