Also places to train gentlemen (sons of elite men) Suggests the importance of education to the puritans. Did not want to rely on the colleges back home in england. Would be taught a limited amount of math. Some schools called dame schools (taught the ornamentals, woman skills) Later they could read history, literature, science and latin are for men. Era that used systematic scientific methods and collected empirical evidence to understand the universe. Emphasized reason, benevolent god: god is the creator, but there is a science that explains how the world operates. Calvinists emphasized god"s power over salvation, but science was more optimistic that humans could learn about and control their environment. Enlightenment emphasized man"s abilities, calvinists emphasized their depravities. Deists believed if you could not prove somethings scientific, it should not be forced in the church.
