Treaty of verdun - charlemagne"s empire divided into 3. Core of his empire was in the east, had always been weakest in the west. Elected king weaker than a hereditary king - owes his elevation to the people who voted for him, gives the nobility more freedom. Church wanted a stronger kings though - more stability. If they could work with a stronger king, they could be protected and the church would be stronger. Church lends its authority to king, idea of sacred kingship. Elected king in 987, king of the franks. Supported by the clergy and most of the nobility, easy election for him. Turned out to be the last election - decided to make monarchy hereditary, asked church to elect his son as associate king. First hereditary succession, established as the norm, passed through that family line. Anointed as king of the west frankish state, successor king to the carolingians.
