Before arabic became a written language it was preserved orally, in the form of poems recited from memory. Scholars identify the origin of literary arabic in them and that it has achieved a high level of sophistication. Later generations refer to it continuously and with great reverence. The genre is referred to as the qas da, meaning a poem. The content is secular, themes which are not religiously inspired (chronologically, it was before islam came into being) Praise for an individual or a tribe, satire of individual or tribe. Praise of moral values and noble behavior as individual qualities.
