History 3427E Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: War Refugee Board, Xenophobia, Bermuda Conference
Document Summary
939 jewish immigrants everyone on the ship already has a visa for. While they are travelling the visas are revoked. Many jewish organizations then rush to try and appeal this. Most of them are told they are not allowed to disembark. Appeals made to the us and canada for them to disembark there. The us does not respond, except they send a boat to shadow them along the coast so that they don"t sneak in. Canada says no because they have to draw the line somewhere . *important element of context when the us and canada say no, it is not yet a death sentence it was 1939 and the holocaust had not begun yet. Jews were being persecuted in germany, but it was not known yet what this would come too. Anti semitism definitely played a part showed that there was international context with this, this was not something just held in.
