History 2131A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Jim Crow Laws, Conservative Coalition, White Supremacy
Document Summary
Very different than eisenhower who was more like a grandpa. Had very bad back pains almost addicted to pain killers. He was dynamic and vigorous, as a president he was going to get america moving again. He was killed to soon to really figure out what kind of a president would have been. He was young, charismatic, handsome, he was the embodiment of post war optimism. No presidency to date had been seen this much in the media. His death was a public spectacle too. If you look at the turbulence to come war, counter-culture, violent protests came after his death. The president had to lead the fight to eliminate racial discrimination. Despite the rhetoric in the deals if you look at kennedys policy"s it had few tangible benefits. Jfk was far more interested in foreign policy. He saw domestic policy as a distraction. The reality of the presidency as a rhetoric. He only won by a slim margin.
