Week 3: rebels with cause: chuck berry, alan freed, and american youth. Bill haney"s rock around the clock was played in this movie (trailer) made the song a hit. Juvenile delinquency: drew a younger audience to see this movie, first rock and roll hit, reinforced the notion that rock and roll could be linked to juvenile delinquency. When it screened, reports of vandalism and fights breaking out in the theatre reinforced all the paranoia about the movie: commentators feared that this was the beginning of a teenage rebellion. Instrumentalists i. e. frank sinatra, tony bennett: songwriters i. e. perry como, bing crosby, vocalists i. e. the andrew sisters. Everyone who was making the music, producing the music, etc. was adults: they were making and marketing the music for/to adults, appealed to white, middle-class audiences. Jazz, blues, country, etc: popular musical forms that were outside the mainstream taste of america. Pop-charts had no link to adolescent lives.
