Nazi germany lecture 3: the consolidation of power and the police state the nazi seizure of power. Time, describe it, significance: november 8-9, 1923 (1) Hitler attempts a coup on the german government (1) Hitler is put in jail for treason (1) Learns that he has to take power legally (2) In comparison to other parts of europe they are doing relatively well. Germans begin to feel more secure therefore more likely to give the republican a chance and to not seek a radical change in government. The grand coalition in the german parliament (adding to the sense of stability) Then the depression hits, throwing everything out of wack. Nazi party is acquiring about 3% of the popular vote: not increasing year after year. Only has about 27,000 members in 1925, 2 years later up to 72,000 gaining but not rapidly. The spd (another political party) has almost 1 million members.
