Excess death is a way of predicting the death rate based upon the life expectancy: 83 000 excess deaths per year among african americans. Shared cultural background people with shared cultural background can be said to share the same ethnicity as well. Visible minority refers to non-white and non-caucasian people. The amount of visible minorities have increased drastically in canada. Immigration process is selective: self selection, racism immigrants are more likely to experience stressors associated with poverty, poor access to services, unemployment and underemployment, etc. Immigrants are not a homogenous group of people: gender role differences (trailing spouses, live-in caregivers, etc. , refugees have greater and more urgent health needs (ptsd, mental health, etc. ) Race or class: health differences between ethnic groups often persist even after socioeconomic factors are taken into account.
