Race is a social and political construct that is used to differentiate between different groups of people on the basis of physical characteristics. A social category that captures differential access to power and resources in society. Very distinct from an ethnic group which simply implies a shared culture/language. There is no biological basis to race! Genetics cannot explain why there are differences in health between racialized groups. African- americans are more prone to hypertension (high blood pressure) and are therefore more likely to die of heart disease. The idea of race emerged with the development of the usa, as africans were thought of being less than humans.
