Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in canada. Smoking affects the health of people at all stages of life and from all walks of life. Females lose more of their life then males from smoking. Rates of smoking varied based on gender, age, ethnicity and education level. Less than a grade 12 education much more likely to smoke cigarettes. Smoking is two to four times as prevalent among people with mental health diagnoses, depression, social phobias and generalized anxiety disorder. The primary reason people use tobacco is b/c they have become addicted to a powerful psychoactive drug called nicotine. Nicotine is a highly addictive and is the most physically addictive of all the psychoactive drugs. It acts on the brain in much the same way as cocaine and heroin. At low doses, it acts as a stimulant, in teens however they show impairment in memory and other cognitive functions. In some circumstances nicotine acts as a mild sedative.
