Second leading cause of death among youth. 14% reported having suicidal thoughts at some point in their lives; 6% in past 12 months. First health related type of death in youth. Second leading cause of death in youth, with first being traffic accidents. Young women attempt suicide abut 3x more often than young men, but males are 4x more likely to die from suicide. Most individuals who have attempted suicide have depressive disorders and feel helpless and powerless over their lives. Difficult to tease apart usual "adolescent angst" from something more serious. Youth and parents, friends, etc. need to be educated on the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide risk. Some parents may fear that talking about suicide will cause their child to consider it - not the case. Ultimately, there is no harm in talking about mental health, but there is great harm in not talking about it.
