HealthSci Lecture Review Notes Woman Abuse Training  1993 - 29% of women reported being physical and/or sexually assaulted by partners  2001 – 69 men killed their current/ex-wives (up from 52 the previous year) o A large number of severe/fatal injuries to children occur in these families as well  1999 – half a million children in Canada were reported to have heard or witnessed an assault on their parent in the previous 5 years  50% of men who frequently assaulted their partners were also reported to abuse their children  Routine Universal Comprehensive Screening for Woman Abuse (RUCS) o Routine – done on a regular basis o Universal – all women over a certain age are screened o Comprehensive – women are asked whether they have or are currently experiencing abuse of any form  Substance abuse, mental health issues, and violence all intersect and affect one another  Only 13% of abused women in Ontario access shelters  Children exposed to woman abuse have comparable levels of emotional and behavioural problems in comparison to children who are directly abused  40% of women abused during pregnancy reported the abuse started when they were pregnant  95% of abusers within intimate relationships are men  Woman abuse (United Nations) – any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty whether occurr
