HS 1002a - Class 18 - Tuesday, Nov. 6 Questions on Film ‘The Beloved Community’  How long has the Aamjiwnaang First Nation been located in this region?  What is ‘chemical valley’? Where is it? What kind of chemicals are prevalent in chemical valley? Directly south of Sarnia made of up of some huge chemical factories. Its not an actual valley its just that things flow into chemical valley and that’s how things were built. Lots of benzene exposure, solid propane, hydrogen sulphite,  How has this First Nation’s relationship to the land been disrupted by the industrialization in Chemical Valley?  What percentage of Canada's petrochemical industry is located in the immediate vicinity of Sarnia, ON?  How many chemical companies listed on the National Pollution Release Inventory are within 10 km (6.2 miles) of Aamjiwnaang First Nation?  The remediation leader from Dow Chemical is critical of the label “toxic”. What do you think of her criticism? Do you agree or disagree? Why? The word toxic creates negativity and fear and doesn’t really convey information accurately. I disagree since it is toxic to health and there is a concern unlike her assertion  What is the sex ratio at birth in the Aamjiwnaang (Chippewa) community? How does this ratio compare to the normal human birth ratio? 2 girls being born to 1 male.  What effects do endocrine disruptors have on the fetus in utero (during pregnancy)? Result of endocrine destruction, whole series of chemicals that act as hormones and favour estrogenic features (Female) and can affect other bodily functions, neurological disorders. Over 500 chemicals that mimic hormones  What kinds of health effects of exposure to chemicals from the petrochemical industry are identified by
