Lecture 17 & 18 - environmental links to health (dispossession, racism, and justice) Application of social determinants of health to the environment. Factors that affect people"s chances to lead healthy lives. Processes that produce determinants: social class --> capitalism, race --> racism, gender --> sexism, etc. We don"t always see the social determinants as tangible; they can become more apparent/illustrated through the physical environment. Economic systems like capitalism, neoliberalism, etc effect the quality of our environments and the extent to which we are protected and safe in those physical environments: air quality, land quality, water quality etc. Rachel carson: organic compounds in every day pesticides and herbicides, critic of health effects of industry (petrochemical, nuclear) The birds stopped singing in the springtime due to industrial pollution: book questioned by the agricultural industry. Resulted in a presidential advisory committee established in the us which examined.
