31 year old bill thomas started working there as medical director. Thomas saw despair in every room and tried to fix it with physical exams, medications, etc. Was confusing care with treatment and realized the missing ingredient was life itself. Thomas believed a good life was one of maximum independence and that was what the people in the home were denied. Culture has tremendous inertia, so they brought the changes in at once (the big bang as they called it) 2 dogs, 4 cats, 100 parakeets, and numerous plants: shock therapy. Proved to be a major challenge as staff had a hard time adjusting. Over time, they settled into a routine and the lights turned back on in people"s eyes. Thomas believed that the difference in death rates that ensued could be traced back to the fundamental human need for a reason to live. Helplessness: the chance to take care of another human being.
