Intro: importance of models and theories, similar to narrowing focus of research paper direction about. Intent of paper: models and theories enable program planners to give structure and organization and understanding to the program process and purpose. Help us understand these questions: models in hp: a map, provide a vehicle for applying theories a framework or map, help us to apply learnings so they can be taken up by target population. How models and theories work together for a successful hp program: theories provide insights and directions. Students and readings; dog and jumping through hoop: models then give steps to actually initiate change. Dog trainer= (cid:862)model(cid:863: a model not grounded in theory is generally unsuccessful. Psychological basis for behaviour change: operant and classical conditioning. Classical/pavlovian conditioning: pair new stimulus with natural stimulus to produce natural response, all responses are reflexes. Operant conditioning: modify behaviour by manipulating the consequences of that behaviour, through (cid:862)shaping(cid:863) we learn to modify our behaviour.
