Chapter 9 - joints functional classi cation: synarthroses - axial. Ex. sutures on skull: amphiarthroses - axial. Ex. joint between ribs and sternum - very controlled movement when we take a breath: diarthroses - appendicular. Ex. knee joint, shoulder joint structural classi cation: brous joints. Little to no movement - dense connective tissue. Sutures, sydesmoses (a joint that has a ligament joining 2 bones together), gomphoses (like a pocket) May or may not have hyaline cartilage which links those bones that articulate together: Ex. ribs - hyaline cartilage joins ribs to sternum. Articulations are not related by brous material but rather cartilage material (hyaline cartilage in most cases: synovial joints. Have it all: joint cavity, hyaline and movement. Most joints in the body are synovial. Forms a capsule-like thing that contains synovial uid which acts like a lubricant so bones can nicely glide across each other.
