Health Sciences 2330A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Scapula, Supinator Muscle, Thoracic Wall
Document Summary
The shoulder as we learned is not physically attached to the limbs. The stabilization of the joint is important, and is done by a collection of muscles. There are some movements of the humerus that requires movement of the shoulder. Adduction (retraction): you are moving the structures closer to the midline. As soon as you move the arm above horizontal. The two bundles of nerves that we are concerned with is the cervical plexus and the brachial plexus. Muscles of the anterior aspect of the thorax that stabilize the scapula. They originate on ribs, they are part of the axial skeleton. The pectoralis minor is deeper to the pectoralis major. And deeper than that is the serratus anterior. The superficial layer of muscles is the trapezius. The trapezius is innervated by the cranial nerve xi (spinal accessory). The levator scapulae which originates on the cervical vertebrae. The rhomboid minor and major work in a similar manner.
