Document Summary
The legislative document which controls and regulated all public research in canada. Why do we need research ethics: correct past problems and abuses. Historically, we have really bad examples of conducting research. It is a later 20th century phenomenon: prevent new problems and abuses. Because they saw previous outrages, they will try to prevent future ones: law is not enough. Have to have research ethics to actually govern the research. Past abuses: two major atrocities in the 20th century led to codification of research ethics, nazi science. Used people in concentration camps to test the limit of human physiology. Really good for scientific findings but look at how it was gained. Impose hypothermia on someone for testing rather than knowing the theory. Testing the minimum oxygen that humans can use to stay alive and dropping them from a higher level: tuskagee institute (alabama)
